This is a two-story country house from the 1950s, located in a small village. The upper floor was used as a small residence, while the ground floor had auxiliary spaces for animals and storage. The study aims to redesign all spaces to meet the modern needs of the residents while highlighting the building’s traditional materials in combination with new contemporary materials.
The ground floor spaces are unified to create an open-plan living area that accommodates the main daily activities, while the upper floor retains the existing room dimensions, now hosting two bedrooms and a bathroom. Stone, as the primary structural material of the building, was chosen to dominate most of the vertical wall surfaces. The wooden roof of the upper floor, as well as the ceiling of the ground floor, are exposed and restored. Regarding the flooring, the ground floor is covered with granitech pluster, ensuring functional continuity, while the original wooden plank flooring of the upper floor is preserved.
In the kitchen area, wooden cabinets were designed, and in the center of the space, a structure made of granite concrete is placed, functioning as an island with a sink for the kitchen, and extending into the space, serving as the dining table. The materiality of this construction visually integrates with the flooring, preventing the space from feeling overly heavy. The remaining space is furnished with a few simple geometric elements. In the bedrooms, wooden beds and custom-made structures are designed to fit the space harmoniously. Soft lighting and decorative elements in neutral color tones complete the design proposal.
